A home business start up gives you a lot of flexibility, but it also comes with its own set of challenges. When you work from home, there are a lot of things that can distract you. It's really easy to get so caught up in other aspects of your life that you don't leave enough time for work. On the other hand, it's also easy to allow your new business to consume you so much that you forget how to have fun. So, in order to help your home business succeed, avoid doing these three things.
Starting the Day Without a Plan
If you don't start the day with a plan, the day can slip by without much to show for it. You can't allow this to happen if you expect your business to be successful. In addition to creating a daily to-do list, you need to create short and long-term goals for your business. This way, you have some direction to follow. Once you've set your short and long-term goals, create a daily and weekly action plan to help you achieve those goals. Avoid writing the tasks from your action plan in to-do list form, however. Instead, write your daily tasks directly into your planner so that you can create a specific deadline for each task's completion.
Failing to Create a Separate Work Area
When you have your own work space, it's easier to separate your work life from your home life. While you can technically run your business from anywhere in your home, you'll be a lot more productive if you have a designated work area. If you don't have an entire room you can devote to your business, it's okay. Simply, create a work area in a room that isn't used as much or in a section of your living area. It's important to choose an area that you can claim as your own without having to worry about a lot of interruptions. So, if you have to work in common part of your house, choose an area that remains fairly quiet, and remove personal objects before you begin working to set a professional tone for the day.
Starting a home business means that you're the boss, and without someone else to answer to, it's easy to allow yourself to be interrupted. However, you have to remember that every time you take a phone call from a friend or family member, you're losing work time, which essentially means you're losing money. To keep the interruptions to a minimum, set daily work hours and stick to the hours you've chosen. In addition to setting business hours, you should also create blocks of time in your daily schedule and designate those blocks of time as quiet time. During this time, you should turn the ringer off on your phone, turn off your email alerts, and refrain from checking social media profiles. This way, you can really concentrate on your work.
